Friendly Japanese Koi feeding near the pickerel plant in one of Paradise Water Gardens' outdoor ponds.

KOI, the colorful Koi was originally bred from Japanese carp over a thousand years ago to provide color and beauty for the gardens of the noble families. Over succeeding centuries, devoted attention to breeding has produced endless new varieties.

Koi are believed to bring people success. Each year on the fifth of May, Japanese families fly Koi made of paper or cloth high in the sky to honor and bring good fortune.

Perhaps the most unusual characeristic of the Koi is its natural tameness. The Koi is unafraid of people and can easily be taught to respond affectionately and can be hand fed.

The sensitive Japanese people are traditionally fond of the colorful Koi. Its beauty and grace have often been depicted by Japanese artists, and no garden pond is considered complete without a selection of beautiful Koi. Always much admired by travelers to Japan, Koi have only recently been bred in sufficient quantitiy to permit export to the United States, and have been successfully bred here allowing them to be affordable by all.

Introduced by the Blue Ridge Fish Hatchery, Butterfly Koi are gaining many converts because of their exquisitely long, flowing finage and bright coloration.

NOTE: No two Koi are alike. Descriptions may vary since range of colors and patterns are endless. Because these Koi are Champion Japanese stock, we can assure you of the widest selection in the most dazzling colors. However, supply of name varieties is limited. Please allow substitutions at our discretion. You may contact us at any time with questions about availiabilty, cost and selection.
